Empty, then measure
Drawers and cupboards should be emptied — weight is what breaks joints and backs. Then measure the item and the tightest doorway or stair turn it must pass. Two minutes with a tape measure saves an hour of wrestling.
Protect the surfaces that get hit
Corners, feet and armrests take the damage. Wrap corners with cardboard or bubble wrap, cover upholstery with old sheets or proper covers, and tape a blanket over glass and mirrored surfaces.
- Bag all fixings and tape them to the frame they belong to
- Remove or lock casters and feet where possible
- Cover mattresses to keep them clean on stairs and pavements
- Tape drawers shut once emptied, or remove them entirely
Dismantle what genuinely needs it
Bed frames, large dining tables and modular sofas usually need breaking down. Wardrobes often do too if the hallway is narrow. If you would rather not, mention it when booking so the time is allowed for.
